2006 New Car Highlights

A new model year brings with it all new cars and the chance for automakers to bring fresh customers into their showrooms in the hopes that some will be persuaded to purchase the new car or at the very least switch to a new brand. Chevrolet HHR – Take one look at the HHR and you may think: this car looks awfully like Chrysler’s PT Cruiser. With that particular assessment, you are correct. Still, the car swiped its styling cues from the 1949 Chevrolet Suburban, but the HHR – Heritage High Top – will compete directly with the PT Cruiser as it does everything the PT Cruiser does and a bit more: you can fit an 8 foot ladder inside the vehicle.

Honda Ridgeline – It has taken some time, but Honda has entered the pick up truck fray with its medium body Ridgeline. Standard four wheel drive, four doors, and a five foot bed with a trunk inside of the floor of the bed are some of the features that sets the Ridgeline apart from the competition. The Ridgeline comes equipped with a 3.5L all aluminum V6 engine and a 5 speed automatic transmission.

Hyundai Azera – Developed to compete against the likes of the Toyota Avalon, the Azera comes equipped with a 3.8L all aluminum V6 engine. The five passenger Azera replaces the luxurious XG350.

Jeep Commander – Trail rated fun just got a bit finer with the Commander, the largest Jeep yet with seating for seven passengers. Based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s frame, the Commander comes with three engine choices including a 3.7L V6, a 4.7L SOHC V8; and a 5.7 Hemi V8 that automatically shuts down four of the cylinders when not needed.

Lincoln Mark LT – Ford’s luxury division gets it own version of the famous Ford F-150 line of pick up trucks. Available as a rear or four wheel drive vehicle, the Mark is a five passenger truck with ebony wood, leather seating, and a long list of luxury features. Standard engine is a Triton 5.4L V8.

Mercury Milan – Based on the Mazda 6 platform, the Milan is a five passenger sedan that comes equipped with either a 2.3 I4 or 3.0L V6 engine. Related cars include the Ford Fusion and the upscale Lincoln Zephyr.

Pontiac Solstice – GM says they created the Solstice to infuse a bit of fun in the Pontiac line up. The two seat rag top Solstice is meant to compete against the wildly famous Mazda Miata and with rear wheel drive, a pair of potent four cylinders to choose from, and priced starting around $20,000 the Solstice at least stands a chance to take away sales from the Miata.

Many other models have been revamped for 2006 including the Honda Civic, Ford Explorer, Lexus IS, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Toyota Avalon and the Chevrolet Impala. Regardless of which model you choose, you are in the commander’s seat as the competition continues to heat up and great deals on new vehicles continue to flow.

The padded mesh inner liner (removable for washing) has a smooth texture and is firm enough to keep the helmet safely in place without being uncomfortable.

Ventilation System

Ventialtion is one of the most important aspects of any helmet. There’s nothing worse than having your head “boil” inside your lid because of poor ventilation. There’s no chance of this happening with the X-Eleven though as the ventilation system is absolutely top-class. It’s got five vents:

one directly in front of the wearer’s mouth
one at the top edge of the visor,
one high on the front of the helmet (this one has two intake holes),
two placed on the back of the helmet, high up, one either side)

The vents work together in perfect harmony to create an airflow around your as well as across the inside of the visor to prevent the dreaded fogging. A certain amount of wind noise is inevitable with any vented helmet but, even with five vents the X-Eleven isn’t a “loud” helmet.

What Cars Have Done For Me

Hello, I’m sure that you’ve figured out who this is, yes that’s right, it’s your favorite American classic car nut, I love them all, as long as they say “Made In The USA” some where on them, I don’t care if it was built by GM, Ford, Mopar, or AMC, it doesn’t matter to me, all that matters to me is that it an American muscle car, and it was built in the 1960’s, or 70’s, that kind of leaves it wide open, but does leave one thing out for sure, and that is imports.

I like the big Heavy Chevy’s, Massive Mopar’s, and Fabulous Fords, all the street burning, road ripping, pavement pounding good old American muscle, nothing has quite the felling of a muscle car from behind the wheel, I remember way back in the day when all my friends and I would gather along the boulevard in the small town where I grew up, we’d park all of our cars right next to each other, and it was just like a car show.

All of us would gather around and tell stories about our big bad muscle cars, we’d talk about who we’d raced, and if we won or lost, and how we could win next time, we’d compare paint, engines, suspension, well you get the idea, we were all learning from each other, the what to do’s and what not to do’s, and without question somebody would always have a new modification to show off, some to make thew car look better, some to make more power, and some to make it handle better.

Some how all the mods ended up on most of our cars, and it was just part of the game, the idea wasn’t always to get power out of the car, but to make things more even, to test our driving skills, and that it did, we tried to keep things as close as possible, it made the racing more interesting, and much more fun, today it not done the same way, it would seen that it’s all about out doing the guy next to you, and none of the kids are true friends.

In my day we used our car to build friendships, and spawn creativity, our cars probably made us better people, I know that our cars made some of us what we are today, they helped us to understand how people work together to get things done, yes our car were truly an extension of us, and our spirit, they were an extension of our creativity, and with out a doubt brought us all closer together and made us one big automotive family.

The Supermarine Spitfire

Ask any old-timer what is the classic fighter aircraft of all time and they are almost certain to name the Spitfire. It has become part of the British folklore - the aircraft that saved the UK in the Battle Of Britain. The reality tells a different story (actually it was the Hawker Hurricane) but that does not diminish the legend of the Spitfire one whit. Others simply admire the beautiful lines of the airframe.

The writing of the history of aviation from the WWII and for twenty years afterward was changed by the omnipresence of the Spitfire. There were 22,579 of them built and they served in all spheres of the War. Whenever there is a story written or a movie shot of that era that involves fighter aircraft, it’s the Spitfire that’s invariably front and center.

This is not to denigrate the Spitfire in any way. It has always been one of the most instantly recognizable of aircraft of any type or time period and certainly was one of, if not the (choose your sides for this argument!) most effective fighter of its time. It was at the cutting edge of aviation technology from the mid 1930s until nearly 1950 and was extensively developed and modified over its operational lifetime, including most of the major developments at the end of the piston-engined fighter era. Adding to the Spitfire’s mystique is that it is synonymous with the most effective aero engine of WWII, the Rolls-Royce Merlin. As noted above, a Spitfire is instantly recognizable. Despite this, there were enormous changes made to the basic Spitfire design and very little of the original aircraft other than general outline persisted to the last Marks. Since in practice, Spitfires were continually being upgraded or simply repaired with whatever fitted and was immediately available, many Spitfires never fitted the description of a typical Mark V (or whatever).

While not externally appearing to change substantially, the Spitfire was massively developed. The Mark 24 was one-third faster than the Mk I in level flight. It had a rate of climb 80% faster, despite a maximum all-up weight over 6,790 lb heavier and had 5 times the firepower. Despite the early origins of the design and major theoretical criticisms, the performance of the wing near to the speed of sound was not bettered until well into the jet era.

After WWII the Spitfire continued to serve in squadron strength in the Far East, based in Singapore and Hong Kong and during the troubles in Malaya flew some 1800 sorties in all. It again saw action in the Israeli/Egyptian fighting in the late forties. A very few even flew photo-reconnaissance flights in the early days of the Korean conflict particularly during the Inchon landings. The last Spitfires were officially retired by the RAF in 1954.

With over 20,000 Spitfires built, today only a handful fly on in the hands of private owners and with the Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Still to this day, whenever the song of a Merlin is heard, it will always evoke an image of Reginald Mitchell’s magnificent creation - the Spitfire and bring to mind the first and last lines of P/O J.G. Magee’s poem, “High Flight”.

Five Ways You Can Avoid Automobile Rip-offs

Good help is hard to find. A good mechanic is even harder. You want to find one that is well trained, knows what they are doing, isn’t inexpensive and most importantly, trustworthy. If you already have a mechanic that fits all the above mention criteria then congratulations, you’re one the lucky few.

For the rest of us, finding a good mechanic can often be a crapshoot. Often times we find one through trial and error or end up settling for one that isn’t as bad the rest. Is this what you really want you want to settle for? Is it really safe? Not only are you possibly spending more money than you should, you are putting your life and the lives of others at risk with a car that isn’t up to standards.

Luckily, there are magazines such as Car and Driver and The Consumer Report to help us. They have put together an excellent list of things you should look for and avoid when searching for an auto mechanic. From licensing to background checks, you’ll have a lot of decisions to think about from this list:

Choose the Right Shop – You basically have three basic choices when it comes to taking your car in for repair. You can go to the dealer, find a chain-store franchise like a Pep Boys, or try a local, independent mechanic at a service station. Where you should go depends on what type of repair you need and where you feel most comfortable. Just try to keep in mind all of them will try to convince you that they are the best ones for the job.

Dealers – Any warranty work should go straight to the dealer. That’s where you’ll find some of the best-trained vehicle specific mechanics for complicated jobs such as electric, chassis, fuel injection and engine work. If your car isn’t under warranty and you’re paying for repairs, you better think twice about having your dealer do the repair. Dealers are obscenely more expensive. They overcharge on labor and a steep premium for factory direct parts.

Chains - Most routine repairs and services, such as brakes, tires, batteries, mufflers and oil changes, don’t demand highly trained mechanics. If you don’t have a mechanic you normally go to, think of these as commodities, and go shopping for a good price at a convenient location. With tires and mufflers, for instance, it’s nearly impossible for dealers or independents to compete with chains. Be sure, however, to go to a chain that specializes in the repair you need. You probably don’t want a brake-shop mechanic fiddling with your transmission.

Independents – Having a mechanic you trust is worth their weight in gold. So if you find an independent mechanic you’re happy with, start there for routine stuff, oil changes, brakes, etc. He charges a little more, but the peace of mind is worth it. Just keep in mind, independent mechanics may or may not know how to do some of the more complicated repairs that need to be done on newer model cars. If you don’t drive an American car, check a specialty shop that focus on only one or two foreign makes. Mechanics at these outfits are often as well or better trained than those at the dealer and they charge a lot less.

Get a Second Opinion - Since most shops have a vested interest in making sure you get as many repairs in their bays as possible, it’s difficult to fully trust even a the most trustworthy mechanic.

Take Your Mechanic to Task - To avoid problems with a new mechanic before the work starts, you might consider checking to see if there have been any complaints logged against the shop with the Better Business Bureau. Check also with your state’s department of consumer affairs, the motor vehicles department, the district attorney’s office or the attorney general. This is a hassle, I know, but you don’t want to be paying for shoddy to the point of criminal work, it might be worth the investment of time. If you feel you’ve been wronged by the mechanic, you can certainly take action.

Check Your Mechanic’s Certification - The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certifies mechanics in eight specialties. This includes brakes, electrical systems, engines, and heating and air conditioning. Although auto mechanics must have two years of experience and pass a standardized exam to become certified, an ASE sticker is no guarantee that the work will be done well. Also, look for repair shops that are endorsed by the American Automobile Association. These facilities must meet rigorous standards and guarantee their work for AAA members.

Beware Unnecessary Repairs - The worst of these phantom repairs is the result of outright fraud. Some scam-artist mechanics have been known to plunk a seltzer tablet into a battery cell, causing it to boil over. Others have been known to squirt oil on your shock absorber to make you think the seal is broken. Then there are the simple, everyday affronts such as the gas station attendant who doesn’t push the dipstick all the way down when checking the oil, prompting you to buy an extra quart. A good way to avoid this problem is to ask to see any old parts or taping an itemized list of all the repairs you want made to your steering wheel. That way the mechanic who works on it will have some instructions from you.

Ford Escape For 2008

A couple of weeks before the Los Angeles Auto Show, some car fanatics have been able to spot the newly revamped Ford Escape which was made ready for the 2008 model year. Although they were able to see some changes to this popular sport utility vehicle, those witnesses were able to say that the Ford Escape really did not go through a major and complete redesign. But they were able to distinguish that the vehicle did receive some changes for its front end.

Some of the biggest changes that were noted were the headlights that looked larger plus a grille that now held three bars. For other changes, the witnesses did mention that the lower end also got some slight changes as well as the arches of the front wheels. As per most of the vehicle’s Ford auto parts, it looks like it was left untouched.

Now at the LA Auto Show, show goers were able to witness the complete changes done to the Ford Escape. Being the best selling compact sport utility vehicle not only in the Ford range but in the whole of the auto market, people were able to enjoy the changes done to the vehicle. Sure enough, Ford made sure that the vehicle would be able to closely contend with other competition like strong vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 as well as the Honda CR-V.

Both the exterior and the exterior of the 2008 Ford Escape got some changes. In fact, the electric power steering that the vehicle now holds is actually new. However, if you are thinking that the power of the vehicle also did get some additional bonuses, you would be disappointed to know that the underpinnings of the vehicle like the engine and suspension systems were not touched by the changes.
